You need an electric fire that doesn’t look electric . If you want a built-in fireplace with no gas line and nothing to burn, and the look of the fire matters as much as the warmth, the Optimyst Aura is the one. A standard screen-and-lights unit reads as an appliance; this one reads as a fire. What Makes It Special The flame is not a screen. Optimyst builds it from a fine water mist lit from below, so the fire is three-dimensional flame made of moving mist —it rises, drifts, and never repeats, and you can view it from the front, a corner, or three sides. The surfaces stay cool to the touch, and the crackle of a natural wood fire finishes the effect. Only the burning is missing. Feeding it is a drawer pull, not a plumbing job—slide the drawer out, add water, slide it back. When you want warmth, Dimplex rates the heater to warm up to 1,000 square feet; in most rooms, expect up to 450 sq ft, depending on climate and layout. When you don’t, run the flame alone, in July as easily as January. It builds into a framed wall and finishes with the material of your choice, and the drawer front can be faced to match, so the fireplace looks like part of the house. Possible Downsides • The Flame Runs on Water: The reservoir needs regular refills through the pull-out drawer. • Fan-Forced Heat Only: It warms the room it’s in; if you want a primary heat source, a gas or wood unit is the better heater. • Everything Needs Electricity: In a power outage there is no flame and no heat.
